Rule of Five

We studied in week 6 of Moving Forward Together the "rule of 5" and how it applies to scripture reading...read 5 verses before and after the scripture you are studying/memorizing for best clarity and understanding; meditate on it 5 minutes; say it out loud 5 times; apply the verse 5 ways.

As we consider this "rule of 5" we discussed ways we can use it for our First Place 4 Health wellness/eating plan...

*Drink 5-6 cups of water per day (minimum)
*Eat 5 cups of fruits and vegetables per day
*Exercise 5 minutes/5 times a day (or exercise 5 times a week)
*Take 5 minutes to plan your meal (either 1 meal or for the day or the week - but take 5)
*If you are headed to the kitchen to grab something to eat but aren't feeling hungry, find 5 things to do instead (example: find homes for 5 stray items; set your kitchen timer for 5 minutes then get something if you find you are hungry; write an email to 5 people; read 5 pages in your favorite book; Open your Bible and pick chapter 5 verse 5 in whatever Book it happens to open to then apply the "rule of 5" for better understanding)

These simple "rules" can help you feel better in your quest for better health.

Give me 5,
Leigh Anne

Forgiveness

"O compassionate Father, I am indeed blessed because You are my God, the One who forgives all my sins. Amen."

First Place 4 Health Bible study, Moving Forward Together, Week five, page 65

Father forgive us for being anxious about the financial situation we are in and the distress we feel towards to future. I am reminded in Your Word..."For I know the plans I have for you", declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future*." It goes on to say that I must come to You and pray and that You will hear my prayers. Thank you Father for your overflowing blessing that is evident in my life. May I be a blessing to others as You direct my path. In the name of Christ Jesus my LORD and Savior, Amen.

Just Say "No"

Titus 2:11-14 (New International Version)

11For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. 12It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

Not just about Weight Loss

"Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:33

This is the foundation which the First Place 4 Health Bible study program was founded. First Place can ..."help you create balance in the four core areas of your life - emotional, spiritual, mental and physical. The results? Weight loss and total health from the inside out!"

For me, this program has not been about my weight its been about balance in my whole being. Searching the scriptures to gain the wisdom and knowledge God wants me to have in order to focus on Him, His plans, and to concentrate on how to get others facing in the same direction. There are several aspects to our lives and God may be dealing with you on your emotions, or your physical well being or another area. That's what is so great about this program, you can, with God's help, improve in that one area only or all the areas at once. The program is designed to be tailored to your needs and what God is wanting to bring out to either get rid of or to bring glory to His name.

Whatever your reason for joining First Place 4 Health, remember you are not alone, and with God all things are possible.

T.H.I.N.K. before you speak

Augustine had a sign on his living room wall that said,

"He who speaks evil of an absent man or woman is not welcome at this table." Instead, try the acronym "T.H.I.N.K."the next time you are not sure whether or not you should say something.

•T- Is it Truthful?

•H- Is it Helpful?

•Is it Inspiring?

•N-Is it Necessary?

•K- Is it Kind?

Instead of speaking evil of someone, we are to "be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another." You might say, "But they don't deserve that!" True, but neither do you or I, and God still forgave us. Paul concludes this passage by saying, "Just as God through Christ has forgiven you." Forgiven people should be forgiving people. Otherwise, we are grieving the Spirit.

To God Be the Glory

When you have considered the question Jesus is asking us "What do you want Me to do for you?", we also have to ask ourselves: "Why do I do what I do?". The Bible says

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men," (Colossians 3:23).

Are you searching for praise from others when you should be seeking to do what you do so your Father in Heaven can say to you: ... 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' Matthew 25:21.

Oh Father please forgive me for wanting praise for myself instead of giving it to You. You who are worthy of all my praise and thanksgiving. You are the One who blesses me beyond my understanding. Please create in me a clean heart as I stand before Your throne of grace. In Jesus name, Amen

Our Power Supply

Our study over the past week was about "Our Power Supply", which is of course the Holy Spirit of God. On Tuesday, our prayer request was centered around this question that Jesus is asking: "What do you want Me to do for you?". The blind man knew what he wanted Jesus to do for him, so did the lame man, and the woman who touched the hem of His garment as well as the man with the sick little girl.

Stop and take a moment to ponder this question as if Jesus is asking you:
"What do you want Me to do for you?"

Right now I want you to focus on Jesus. Use your prayer time to talk to Him about yourself. In a later prayer time you can discuss your other prayer requests, but right now think about this question. Do you know what you want Jesus to do for you? He is waiting for you to let Him know.

Love,
Leigh Anne

Week 6 Pave the Pathway with Prayer

"Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know." Jeremiah 33:3

National Day of Prayer - May 7th

I Thessalonians 5:16-18

" Be joyful always;

pray continually;

give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

Week 5 Our Battle Hymn

2 Corinthians 10:4

"The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds."

Helpful or Harmful

Good Morning! FYI It's 7:15 am eastern.

Read Matthew 14:22-33. Are you focusing on the things that can cause harm to the work Christ has set before you? Are you crying out to Him in your time of need? Why is it that we constantly are learning the lesson that if we just cry out to Jesus in our time of need He will immediately come to our rescue? And why do we get ourselves is the predicament that we become 'urgent' with our request? Ugh!

What is harmful to you as you pursue Christ? Doubt; Fear; Worry; Loss of Focus (on Jesus); Crowds (of the wrong kind).

What is helpful to you as you pursue Christ? Trust; "Getting out of the Boat"; Prayer (a crying out); Faith; Peace; Solitude (alone time with Christ away from people, different from feeling lonely - which we are never alone when our focus is on Christ).

My prayer: LORD, Save Me! Save me from my selfish ways.

Sleep

Hello its 7 am Eastern.

I wanted to let you know that I was in bed before 9pm and set my alarm for 6a and made myself stay in bed until it went off. I woke up before it went off but I don't knwo when because I refused to look at the clock. I was determined to stay at rest until 6a.

I did dream so I don't know really how much sleep I now feel really good about what I can accomplish today.

We read about how we need sleep just as much as we need to eat so doing both without starving either will help us make us strong to do what Christ has set before us.

Thank you for your prayers and encouragement. You guys helped me realize that I was not giving myself enough rest. Your commitment to the First Place meetings is crucial to helping each other through these times when we cannot see looking out but you can see looking in.

Love,
Leigh Anne

Week 3 Day 2 Still

What have you given up so that you can wholeheartedly commit yourself to physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fitness through participation in First Place 4 Health?

What are the things you must leave behind in order to achieve success about letting your yes be yes and your no be no?

What do you need to say no to in order to say yes to Jesus' call that you care for yourself as a reflection of His love for you?

Week 3 Day 2

James 4:17 "Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins". Are you still on your knees? I feel like I am. I realized that this is the reason we must 'pray continually' and confess the sins we are not aware of because we are constantly at battle in this area (at least I am.) I felt a sense of condemnation fall on me because I fail in this arena all the time. I know what I should do to eat better; exercise; schedule my; pray; study the Bible; memorize scripture, etc. (Notice I did not say attend church-that is for another discussion) There are only so many 'activities' I can fit into my day or week so choose wisely with His counsel on where you need to be and when.

Ouch! I need a boo boo cover. Wait I have it! It's His banner of Love. Not an excuse but an acknowledgement that He is my rock and my Source of encouragement.

"O Lord, how foolish I am when I make vows instead of simply saying yes to the things You are asking of me. Please forgive me for substituting boastful words for consistent action. Amen.
FP4H Prayer end of Day 2 Week 3

Week 3 Words for the Wise Traveler

"It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it." Ecclesiastes 5:5

Monday, April 20, 2009

Week 2 Day 5 - Resolve and Determination

Day 5 Not too difficult - I resolve to do what's right with regard to my relationship with Jesus; I am determined to let the fruit of self-control be evident in my eating habits and the priority I give the activities I get involved in and do what is best for me and my family. I must do the FP4H on purpose, for a purpose...HIS PURPOSE. What do you resolve to do?

Friday, April 17, 2009

Week 2 Day 3

How did you do over the Easter holiday? What excuse did you use to overindulge? Why do we allow ourselves to self-sabotage and then blame everyone else? Taking personal responsibility is something that has lost its value these days. It's McDonald's fault that they insist I super size so now I am overweight. Paleese! I know it's hard for me to say 'no'. You can tell that by my schedule so what is a girl to do? I have learned (and still learning) that being still, if just for a short period of time, say 15 minutes, and reviewing my to do list helps me refocus on my mission for the day. Currently, I am trying to overcome (endure) some back pain in the middle of my shoulders and tried everything yesterday. I did my Bible study, prayed, cried, took motrin, used an ice pack, laid around on the couch and on the bed, soaked in the tub (with bubbles), and yes it eased up until I got up to do something around the house. I must realize that I need to take care of myself so that I can take care of those around me. That means saying yes to letting my to do list sit unattended for awhile until I have accomplished what really matters, time in His Word and prayer. I felt very relaxed after these things were complete because they were the most important of the day. How is your day prioritized? Are you taking time to say no to things and yes to rest in Christ Jesus? Please consider it today and every day!

Week 2 Day 2 Daily Victory, Daily Joy

Day 2 Reference: Luke 9:57-62 Jesus was on His way when He performed miracles and preached. On His way to His destination He encountered people and considered it an opportunity to minister. He knew His final destination and kept the end result in mind along the way. What does your journey look like? Are you touching lives for Jesus on your journey? Or are you frustrated and impatient with the 'interruptions' instead of thinking about them as 'opportunities' to share the love of Jesus?

Jesus did not take a shortcut or make excuses on His way to the cross. His journey took time with many obstacles (opportunites) along the way. Are you taking advantage of the opportunities to make better choices?

Lord, help me!

Week 2 Day 1 - Daily Victory, Daily Joy

Week 2 Day 1 Encountering Obstacles: Have you resolved to follow Christ with all your soul and all your heart?
"Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach." Deuteronomy 30:11
Welcome to the Smith Memorial Baptist Church (SMBC) Ladies Bible Study. We are currently studying First Place 4 Health. This is our second 12-weeks in a year long journey to a healthier lifestyle. Our focus is on putting Christ First Place in our lives and gaining a sense of balance as we focus on Him in 4 areas of our lives: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. This sessions study is entitled Daily Victory, Daily Joy. Please check back for frequent updates and challenges during this study time. The study books are available from SMBC for $13 each. Tip of the Day February 3, 2009

Use less or no sugar in your coffee or tea. Also less creamer. You can get some of your milk in this way though. Use low fat milk instead of cream in your tea and coffee.

You know my folly O God; my guilt is not hidden from you. Psalm 69:5

Monday, February 2, 2009

Tip of the Day February 2, 2009

Limit fried foods to once or twice per week.

What more can I say, all that high fat stuff is just plain bad for ya!

Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. John 14:21

Words of the Day February 2, 2009

Perseverance, Forgiveness, Endurance, Obedience...Read Matthew 14:22-33. What happened to Peter when he took his eyes off Jesus? Then what happened? How can you apply verse 30 to your life? What are your eyes fixed on? Repeat after me - Perseverance, Forgiveness, Endurance, Obedience...Perseverance, Forgiveness, Endurance, Obedience. Again...Again...and Again. Keep reminding yourself to keep up the GOOD work and throw off (or throw out) that which entangles us and causes us to sin.

Tip of the Day January 31, 2009

Cut back on butter and mayo.

Try sprays for cooking and yogurt with some lemons for dressing for salads.

When cooking onions on the stove top just add a little water instead of butter and cook until clear.

Have a great day!

Order half portions at restaurants, or share a full portion with somebody. Or ask for a "to-go" container when you order your food, and pack up half the portion before you even start eating. If going fast food order from the kids menu. (That is actually the portion size we should have!)

Restaurants over portion everything so we think we are getting our monies worth. The amount of food we get is WAY too much! So, spread the food around and share!

Water, water, water....This will help you not hold water, and no longer be dehydrated. Your skin and hair will also love this. They will not be as dry!

Have a great day!
